The Right Way To Do a Bedroom - Step 2

Step 2. Functional

2. The key to creating a great bedroom is what designers call the "elements of design." That means to build a working space, you need to first break it down. And that all boils down to function. To combine objects to create a pleasing whole, you have to first inventory the basics. That's easy enough: You need a bed for comfortable, healthy sleep. You need nightstands that are reachable from the bedside (the correct distance is about four to eight inches) and are correctly in proportion to the bed. If you must have a TV in your bedroom, you need a beautiful place to house (and hide) it. And you need a logical safe traffic flow so you don't bump anything in the night.

Before it became part of the family quarters, the Queens’ Bedroom—where Queen Elizabeth II, of the United Kingdom; Queen Sonja, of Norway; and Queen SofĂa, of Spain, have stayed during visits to the White House—was once an office for presidents’ staff. In its current incarnation, the room is meant to evoke an early-19th-century New England bedroom. Armchair, bed hanging and drapery silks.**
