Closet Factory

Do You Hate Your Closet?
The shelf & pole or wire racks that came with the house simply don't do the job you need them to do. Those shoe rack kits and collapsible sweater shelves you bought online, from the discount store, or from the DIY warehouse only help a little.  Even though you've done all you can by yourself, your closet just isn't quite right... You need help... Closet Factory, wants you to call them! You can find their products here in the Valley or visit them at Closet Factory.

Leaf Light

Yves Béhar’s innovative and eco-friendly Leaf Light has been awarded a 2008 Red Dot Award for Product Design. This LED light was chosen from thousands of entries in the lighting category for its functionality, ergonomics, durability and energy-saving capabilities.

A LED, short for light-emitting diode, is a semiconductor device which converts electricity into light. LEDs are better at placing light in a single direction than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. LED lights are more rugged and damage-resistant than compact fluorescents and incandescent bulbs. LED lights don't flicker. They are very heat sensitive; excessive heat or inappropriate applications dramatically reduce both light output and lifetime. LED lights also do not produce heat like incandescent lights. LEDs last considerably longer than incandescent or fluorescent lighting. LEDs don't typically burn out like traditional lighting, but rather gradually decrease in light output.

SOHO Concept

Coffee Tables: Domino Coffe Table available at SOHO Concept is possibly one of the best examples I have found recently of function in furniture being extremely exciting! The Domino is a square coffee table with 4 equally sized table tops that slide apart to provide access to the storage space inside. Another purpose it can serve is to bring the one's cup or other items placed on the table top closer to the sofa and significantly ease his or her reach. Perfect!

The Harmony Sofa also found as SOHO Concept is another great example of form and function doing style. The playful Harmony sofa is sure to attract attention any interior setting. Its unique figure reminds the futuristic concepts of the sixties. The thick seat not only provides superior comfort but also displays a feeling of luxury. The matching curvilinear lines are extended throughout to accomplish solidity and unity. The best feature: The form of the sofa is perfect for a many Sunday afternoon naps!

My personal favorite sofa over at SOHO Concept is the voluptuous Lip Sofa. No this is not a joke. Yes it really is functional furniture. Perfect for the ultimate Diva room the Lip Sofa definitely a conversation starter piece.

Small space, not a problem

Think you can't use bold oversized accessories in a small space? Think again.  Bold shapes and unusual elements can actually make a modest size room appear larger.

One strong object can make a dramatic focal point that draws your eye across the room and adds the illusion of depth. Horizontal elements will make a narrow space appear wider. For rooms that lack architectural character, the introduction of one engaging piece adds instant personality. Whatever piece you choose, I caution you to eliminate clutter and keep the rest of the space sleek and simple.

The Right Way To Do a Bedroom - Step 5

Step 5   Go for the Gestalt

5. The dictionary definition for "gestalt" is a set of elements such as a person's thoughts and experiences considered as a whole and regarded as amounting to more than the sum of its parts. It's really our human tendency to "complete" objects. For example, when looking at a quarter moon, our minds finish the circle. Same thing applies when decorating. If you choose a curvilinear form for the bedroom furniture complete the "circle" with roundish motifs for the linen fabric and window treatments. It's a pleasing whole!  Continue your marrying of like forms in the bedroom, and you'll create a wonderful, pleasing space.

The Right Way To Do a Bedroom - Step 4

Step 4 Color
4. What color will best suit your place of rest? Analogous color schemes (colors right next to each other on the color wheel) promote restfulness. If you want splash and dash in your master bedroom tour de force, choose a complementary motif with colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. In either case, here's an important tip: The easiest way to colorize a room is to select the largest pattern in the space first and then pull colors from that pattern. An easy way to make your colors work is to follow the 60-30-10 rule of successful color. The main color palette (the 60) is the pleasing neutral on the walls and window treatments. A splash of color on the bedcovers, or furniture adds a pleasing bright spot (30), and accents in a stable, darker color add the contrast (10).

The Right Way To Do a Bedroom - Step 3

Step 3 Lighting

3. Every room in the home requires two forms of lighting: task and ambient. Carefully select the right brightness level for tasks such as reading, or other tasks in the master bedroom. But don't forget the ambiance! Remember, there is a tad of romance to this whole thing (I hope).

Strategically placed canister lights that shine up from the floor and other ambient light sources can add a lot of attitude. And having several light choices allows you to create a wide variety of lighting effects at different times, making the room versatile for your many needs.

The Right Way To Do a Bedroom - Step 2

Step 2. Functional

2. The key to creating a great bedroom is what designers call the "elements of design." That means to build a working space, you need to first break it down. And that all boils down to function. To combine objects to create a pleasing whole, you have to first inventory the basics. That's easy enough: You need a bed for comfortable, healthy sleep. You need nightstands that are reachable from the bedside (the correct distance is about four to eight inches) and are correctly in proportion to the bed. If you must have a TV in your bedroom, you need a beautiful place to house (and hide) it. And you need a logical safe traffic flow so you don't bump anything in the night.

**Picture above: Queens’ Bedroom in the White House
Before it became part of the family quarters, the Queens’ Bedroom—where Queen Elizabeth II, of the United Kingdom; Queen Sonja, of Norway; and Queen Sofía, of Spain, have stayed during visits to the White House—was once an office for presidents’ staff. In its current incarnation, the room is meant to evoke an early-19th-century New England bedroom. Armchair, bed hanging and drapery silks.**

The Right Way To Do a Bedroom - Step 1

5 Steps to the make your bedroom your ultimate sanctuary.

The home as a refuge takes on even greater meaning when it comes to the bedroom, the ultimate escape for the world-weary. Once behind closed doors, the world outside of your home goes poof, and troubles should be laid to rest. That is, if you've created a bedroom design that truly soothes your soul. If you haven't already created this sanctuary, here are a few guidelines to get your sanctuary started.

1. Determine your style. Think about what makes you happiest, what colors or styles produce the greatest peace of mind. Dream big. What have you always, always, always wanted. Identify that, and you can figure out what furnishings, arrangement and environment will deliver your perfect space. If your big dreams are past your budget, not a problem. Identify what part of your dream can be accomplished on your budget and find other ways to compensate for the rest. For instance, slowly acquire the pieces you want, or find ways to duplicate ideas that you enjoy. Remember if there is a will there is a way.
One good thing about the bedroom is that it’s private. Because you can close the door between your room and your public spaces, it really is OK to go with the style you want, even if it doesn’t match the rest of the house. Of course, you can marry your bedroom style with the rest of the home, if that is your cup of tea. Having said that I do not think you should have a southwestern style in your living area and have a super posh modern bedroom. There should be a flow, the difference is not making it all look like the same room. Each room should have its own identity. Your bedrooms main identity, Sanctuary - build your room around that.
